I’ve been building terrain, when I’m not editing the two core books for the Stars of Empire RPG. I have a modular concept so I can fit it more easily into the Ranger.
The basic elements are composite 4 foot by 3 foot sheets I made up from plywood and foam sheet. I put the frame from drop ceilings on two sides. I added rare earth magnets to hold terrain pieces but I don’t think I will need them. To give the sheets texture and color I painted them with green latex and then flocked the crap out of them. Then I sprayed them with several coats of matte finish. I made six of them, so I can have a table 18 feet by 3 feet.
I built vertical sections using several sheets of 2 inch foam to represent the upper portions of the Hive, both undamaged and shattered. The shattered sections will get debris fields as well. I also used a variety of styrofoam bait boxes and spray foam. The solvent in spray paint helped add texture to the foam sheets by dissolving the surface of the sheeting. I used textured spray paint for the outer surface after using primers to put on the base color.
Three types of foam make up the Hive.
I also added a stand alone structure for use on one of the end sections.

At the Department of Energy Weldon Spring Interpretive Center Weldon Spring Site Interpretive Center
(7295 Highway 94 South, St. Charles, MO 63304) we have reserved a meeting room for the three days of the President’s Day Weekend (Saturday February 17th-Monday February 19th). To show off this space we are hosting a FREE three day mini-convention.
We are using the entire 30 X 30 space all weekend for a large game of The Hive and the Flame, which is an approved major variant of The Sword and the Flame. Allied human forces will attack an alien hive in Central America in 1900, using Victorian Science Fiction weapons and equipment. Everything will be provided and rules will be taught.
Due to the nature of the space there will be no dealers present.
If this event draws enough interest we will have future events with more diverse game choices, but selected this one because the rules are fairly simple and we have all the models, miniatures and terrain we need “in house” to ensure there are no logistical issues.
In terms of the space itself: There is a coffee maker, microwave and nice bathrooms. It also has ample parking.
We have room for lots of players on Presidents’ weekend so please spread the word widely. Everything except food is provided. Rules are modified Sword and the Flame. If you don’t know them we will teach you!
